The Mothering Blackness

She came home running
       back to the mothering blackness
       deep in the smothering blackness
white tears icicle gold plains of her face
       She came home running
She came down creeping
here to the black arms waiting
now to the warm heart waiting
rime of alien dreams befrosts her rich brown face
       She came down creeping
She came home blameless
       black yet as Hagar’s daughter
       tall as was Sheba’s daughter
threats of northern winds die on the desert’s face
       She came home blameless

Grip-Jericho Brown

Today, I’m sharing another Jericho Brown poem. My love for his work has grown quickly and I love this piece for the overall story it tells as well as the line, “If he tastes mud as bitter as this poem.” That line is a story unto itself in nine words. It has inspired to try my hand at lines this impactful.

Enjoy!

If it had become a competition in which we,
Like children desperate for the blue ribbon,
Pulled knotted hemp, gripping until certain
Of calluses, if our contest awarded the strongest,
The boy who could best inflict pain yet not
Flinch when injured, then you won, for I must
Imagine the brown of your back to reach my
Peak, a short thread of breaths, a tug of war
With the heaviest child grunting at the end
Of the rope until jerked and dragged over
The line. That fat kid flounders through muck
The way I splash your relentless name
In shivers about me. Watch him wallow.
If he tastes mud as bitter as this poem
Of mine, then I win – and you love me.

Poem For A Lady Whose Voice I Like- Nikki Giovanni

I apologize for the absence from the blog. 2019 has been crazy for me so far; but I am hoping that I can focus on writing and curating starting next week. I definitely need to get back to planning and scheduling my posts ahead of time. As always, enjoy!

so he said: you ain’t got no talent
if you didn’t have a face
    you wouldn’t be nobody
and she said: god created heaven and earth
and all that’s Black within them
so he said: you ain’t really no hot shit
    they tell me plenty sisters
take care better business than you
and she said: on the third day he made chitterlings
and all good things to eat
    and said: “that’s good”
so he said: if the white folks hadn’t been under
yo skirt and been giving you the big play
you’d a had to come on uptown like everybody else
and she replied: then he took a big Black greasy rib
from adam and said we will call this woeman and her
name will be sapphire and she will divide into four parts
that simone may sing a song
and he said: you pretty full of yourself ain’t chu
so she replied: show me someone not full of herself
and i’ll show you a hungry person
