Reading Things

On December 21st, I made a reading goal to finish twelve to eighteen books by the new year. A few of those books would be Christmas novellas, but there are a few full-length novels in that group, too. At the time, I only needed four books to meet my goal of 300 books for the year, but last year, I finished with a total of 318 books read. I’m currently at 313 books, and I really want to finish Riley Sager’s The Only One Left, which is really interesting so far,by the 31st, so that I can complete the current Kindle Challenge.

One of the things I like most about the Kindle Challenges is that in addition to awarding marks for continuous reading, they also encourage reading in various genres. Throughout the year, I’ve read two self-help books that I probably would have bought but only partially read. I also explored several Kindle Vella series, which I don’t typically do. So as I wrap up this year’s challenge, I want to finish strong by completing the Sager book, which is a Best of 2023 book.

Unlike a lot of other readers, I don’t create a TBR of books to read in the upcoming year. I read diverse genres and authors, so I rarely know what I’ll be reading unless an author has a book that is scheduled to release in the new year. I typically set a numeric goal based on what I think I’ll be able to accomplish. I didn’t think I would make this year’s goal, so in 2024, I’ll be keeping the same number(300). I want to make sure that I continue to build on my newly developed self-help habit and to include more non-fiction.

Do any of you have book goals for 2024? Or book recommendations?

Hope is the thing with Feathers-Emily Dickinson

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
